A History of the Best Picture Oscar Part V

Birdman – 2015

This black comedy-drama, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, has the full title Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). It tells the story of a washed-up superhero actor, played by Michael Keaton, as he attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.

In preparation for the movie, Keaton reflected on his earlier role as Batman in Tim Burtons 1989 mega-hit. In fact, the Birdman suit that he wears in this film was made on a mannequin of his own body from the original Batman film.

This was the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture to have been shot entirely digitally. Prior to its win, every past winner had been shot entirely or partially on film.
