A History of the Best Picture Oscar Part III

Kramer vs. Kramer – 1980

This Dustin Hoffman led legal drama, written and directed by Robert Benton, was based on Avery Corman’s novel about a warring couple’s fight for custody of their son Billy.

The actor playing the young Kramer was a debut role for Justin Henry, one that earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, when he was eight years old. As of 2020, he is the youngest actor to be nominated in any category, and the only actor ever nominated in the same decade as his or her birth.

In one of those Life imitating art moments, Hoffman was actually going through a messy divorce from his first wife Anne Byrne at the time of filming.

In part four we will take a look at the Best Picture winners from 1981 to 2000 and witness the birth of the Hollywood blockbuster and the rise of computer generated effects.
