1. Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus
Probably one of the most known kidnapping stories, the three women were gradually kidnapped and secluded in a house by the same man between 2002 and 2004. Despite being quite recent, it was only in 2013 that they were rescued, and their abductor, Ariel Castro, went to prison.
Castro first abducted Michelle in 2002, only for him to take Amanda in 2003 and Gina in 2004. While Michelle just went missing, the other two accepted car rides from the man because they knew his daughters, only for them to be taken to his Cleveland home, where they would spend the next few years. They endured years of starvation, rape, and torture at the hands of the man, and Amanda even gave birth to a child in 2006.
They managed to flee this nightmare when the man forgot to lock the door properly and Amanda managed to flee with her daughter to the neighbor’s house, where she contacted the police. This way, they managed to save the other two women, and Castro got arrested, soon pleading guilty to all his charges. He committed suicide in prison one month into his sentence, but his crime will never be forgotten.
2. Jaycee Lee Dugard
Jaycee was kidnapped in 1991 when she was only 11 years old from the street that she lived on by Phillip Garrido. She was then taken to his home where she had been kept in the shed for 18 years. Jaycee was abused by both Garrido and his wife, Nancy Bocanegra, and ended up having two daughters.
The couple abused her for so long that she developed Stockholm syndrome and ended up presenting herself as Alissa and even working in her kidnapper’s printing shop. The police saw the man’s erratic behavior when he was visiting UC Berkeley’s campus in 2009, and this together with the strange way the children were acting made them bring him in.
Eventually, he confessed, despite Jaycee introducing herself to the police as Alissa, and ended up being sentenced to 431 years in prison. His wife was sentenced to 39 years to life. The story may have a happy ending, but the girl will never get those years of her life back.
