A hidden staircase which leads to a secret room inside a 19th Century Victorian home.
Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester of Winchester rifles, was positive that her house located on the outskirts of San Francisco was haunted by the ghosts of all the people killed by Winchester guns. To disorientate the spirits, Sarah Winchester hired workers to modify her home and build new additions, without using any blueprints.
The house ended up having countless architectural anomalies, including rooms with no doors, staircases that lead nowhere, and hidden passageways, like the secret staircase shown in this photo. To confuse the spirits even further, Winchester spent the night in a different room each night. Changes to the house stopped when Winchester died on September 5, 1922.
