Did you know that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is home to Latin America’s largest library, the National Library of Brazil? As it can be seen in the picture, it is a colossal and astonishing building, the 7th largest library in the world, in fact, and an important factor in promoting and improving the library system in this South American nation.

As a matter of fact, the National Library of Brazil provided the first library science classes in Latin America and the personnel had a key role in developing several modern library services such as the online databases. One of the most important artifacts is a 19th-century collection of more than 20,000 photographs by Teresa Cristina Maria.
