School bus in northern Maine, 1930.

Maine is known for its abundant snow, especially in its northern region. It is sometimes measured in feet, nit inches, and that’s got to say something! Back in the 1930s, regardless of the heavy snows, children still had to go to school. Enter this uniquely shaped bus school.

The strange bus school was designed for deep snow and cold and featured a covered and enclosed house-like building on sleds, meant to keep pupils warm and protected against the forces of nature on their way to school. The compartment was quite stingy in terms of windows, but it did have a small heater stove to keep the kids warm during the cold and snowy winter months.
