16 Most Iconic and Important Photos in the History of the United States

“It’s not enough to capture a moment in history. The most influential, powerful and famous photos are the ones that capture the deeper significance of that moment: the energy and emotion; the triumphs of the human spirit and the consequences of our errors; our helplessness, our glory, our power.”

Ever since it was invented, photography has helped us take a glimpse into the most important and decisive moments in the history of the United States. From the first step on the Moon or the legendary Woodstock music festival to the greatest demonstration for freedom and equality, this collection of iconic photos will take you back in time to events that have marked and changed the course of our nation.

Men on the moon – 1969

“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This is what everyone heard on July 20, 1969 when mission commander Neil Armstrong exited the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle and became the first person to ever walk on the moon. Together with pilot Buzz Aldrin, Armstrong landed the lunar module, stepped out and erected the American flag on the surface of the moon, marking one of the most astonishing accomplishments in human history.

The journey to the moon and back took eight days, aboard the Apollo 11. This photo shows pilot Buzz Aldrin standing next to the flag, in what has become one of the most emblematic photos in U.S. history.
