Charlie Chaplin, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi
This intimate picture captures The Tramp and India’s first prime minister lost in conversation as Nehru’s daughter Indira Gandhi stares off into the distance. It was April 1953 and they were both in Switzerland at the time, Chaplin having recently moved there after his re-entry permit to the US was revoked and Nehru was attending a conference of Indian ambassadors.
However, there is something special about this photograph as it might have not been taken at all. That’s because Nehru had agreed to an invitation by Chaplin to visit his house in Corsier-sur-Vevey, overlooking Lake Geneva and on the journey there they narrowly missed an on coming car.
