The Xenia tornado was a significant part of a disaster labeled the 1974 super outbreak, which comprised 148 tornadoes in 13 states. Of all the tornadoes in the outbreak, the Xenia tornado resulted in the most deaths, killing 34 people. Approximately 50% of the city’s buildings, including nine churches and seven of the 12 schools, suffered total destruction. Three hundred residences were also destroyed.
